About our internships
We run two internship programmes each year: Our Pioneering Potential programme (July) and the Summer Academy August). Both follow the same structure and offer hands-on experience as a Consultant. The difference between them? The Summer Academy is open to all students, while Pioneering Potential is designed to support fair access to those from lower socio-economic backgrounds.
Programme information
Our Summer Academy is open to all students working towards a degree and you don’t need any previous experience to apply. We only accept one application per person each year. So, you’ll need to decide which of our programmes is right for you at this stage.
Who is the programme for?
Unfortunately, we are unable to sponsor individuals who need a Skilled Worker Visa for this internship programme.
For international students, we’ll cover the cost of accommodation during the working week. However, we can’t cover weekends, which means that you’ll need to organise your own summer accommodation.
Consulting is an incredible career. But we realise that people don’t always have access to the same opportunities for advancement. Our Pioneering Potential programme is built to address this disparity and encourage candidates from lower socio-economic backgrounds to discover avenues into consulting.
We’re accepting applications for our Pioneering Potential Programme from students who are working towards a degree and who meet any of the following criteria:
The criteria for our Pioneering Potential programme have been developed in line with the Social Mobility Foundation’s guidance for recognising working-class or lower socio-economic backgrounds in students. We have also used the UK Government’s recommended list of parental occupations to help us define lower socio-economic backgrounds in our workforce.

The internship experience
Our internships teach you everything you need to be a successful Consultant, which having the chance to contribute valuable work and effort to a real project.
Both internships follow the same structure, starting with a two-week induction on our processes and methodology. You’ll learn how to be a Consultant; building on your soft skills like presenting and communication, while working through a series of case studies. You’ll spend the whole of your induction within the same group, learning from one another and getting stuck in.
In the final two weeks, you’ll use your training on a live project, on-site, working alongside our people and clients on real challenges. While on project, you’ll be supported by the team around you and your dedicated manager, and you’ll have the chance to connect with others at team review days and the penultimate night dinner.
At the end of the programme, you’ll have the chance to present back to us about your time at Newton and what you’ve learnt.
Those who shine as an intern will be offered a position on our Graduate Consultant programme when they finish university.

FAQs
The Summer Academy and Pioneering Potential internships are one-month taster programmes for students and young people interested in a career in consulting. They can offer you a clear idea of whether Newton and consulting are right for you, while also teaching you the skills you need before you begin a full-time role. You can take part in either internship before the Graduate Consultant programme.
The Graduate Consultant programme is an entry-level position for those who’ve recently graduated and are looking to start their career in consulting. You build your core skills in consulting over two years, working your way up to a Senior Consultant level and specialising if you choose.
Yes, international students studying at a UK university on a Student or Graduate Visa are eligible to apply. Unfortunately, Newton is unable to sponsor individuals who need a Skilled Worker visa for these internship programmes.
Yes, you’ll receive a pro-rata salary of £30,000, with your living expenses also covered during your internship.
We usually open applications for our summer internships at the end of each year. We recommend checking the website, LinkedIn or Instagram from September onwards.
You’ll start your summer internship at our Kingston Bagpuise office in Oxford. Then you’ll be placed onto a project, which could be based anywhere in the UK, so you should be prepared to travel.
Our application process

Simply fill out our online form and answer some questions about your education, work experience and achievements. If you’re applying for our Pioneering Potential programme, we’ll also ask you questions in relation to our eligibility criteria.

You’ll start with our Realistic Job Preview Quiz, which isn’t assessed, and helps you decide if Newton is right for you. Then you’ll complete our cognitive tests covering logical reasoning, numerical skills and data interpretation. To finish, you will answer two questions as part of a Video Interview.

This is your opportunity to meet us virtually, for a 60-minute interview. This will be split into two parts, the first being a competency focus where we will explore your experiences and strengths, followed by analytical questions where we’ll look at your ability to digest and analyse information.

Join us at our virtual assessment centre to take part in a group exercise, technical task and mini-interview, based on real Newton case studies. You’ll meet some of our Consultants and can ask questions in a Q&A.

Got the internship role? Great, we look forward to welcoming you to the team in the summer. If you’re successful as an intern, you’ll be offered a Graduate Consultant role with us once you graduate from university.
